Philadelphia Federal Credit Union as First Title Sponsor of Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby and Arts Festival

Feb 23, 2015

Philadelphia Federal Credit Union’s three-year commitment will help ensure Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby and Arts Festival continues to grow and serve community

Philadelphia, PA, February 18, 2015 – New Kensington Community Development Corporation (NKCDC) and the East Kensington Neighbors Association (EKNA) announce today that Philadelphia Federal Credit Union (PFCU) will be the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby and Arts Festival’s first title sponsor. The three-year title sponsorship commitment begins at the 10th annual Philadelphia Federal Credit Union Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby and Arts Festival scheduled to take place Saturday, May 16, 2015.

“We’re so pleased to have the support of the Philadelphia Federal Credit Union to continue in this fun tradition. They’ve been a great neighborhood partner on many fronts and we’re looking forward to a bigger, better, and whackier event than ever!,” said Sandy Salzman, Executive Director of NKCDC.

NKCDC and EKNA have joined forces for a decade to produce the daylong annual event which will now be known by a new, official joint title: Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby and Arts Festival. The festivities will continue to consist of both a sculpture derby (previously called the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby) and arts festival (previously called the Trenton Avenue Arts Festival). Both events were established to draw residents and visitors into the burgeoning Frankford Avenue Arts Corridor and foster neighborhood revitalization. The kinetic sculpture derby is a design competition and parade of human powered vehicle floats striving for either Best Art, Best Costume, Best Engineering, People’s Choice, Best Breakdown or the highly coveted Judge’s Choice Award. The arts festival on Trenton Avenue & Norris Street, consists of 200+ local arts and food truck vendors, along with live arts demonstrations and performances.

"The Arts Festival adds to the fun of the Sculpture Derby by attracting hundreds of local artisan vendors each year, showing off the pride of craftsmanship that the Kensington neighborhood has been known for since the time of the Industrial Revolution. The Arts Festival also features live arts demonstrations, food trucks, a Kids Korner, and much more. East Kensington Neighbors Association is proud to partner with NKCDC and PFCU to put on what many call the best day in the neighborhood,” said Clare Dych, President of EKNA.

PFCU’s sponsorship commitment will allow the 2015 event to feature new opportunities for participants and attendees. New additions to this year’s event include expanded youth and school involvement, giveaways for event attendees, and a live band.

“When PFCU opened a branch in East Kensington nearly two years ago, we made a commitment to residents and businesses in the community that we would provide them with the tools needed to get ahead financially,” said James McAneney, President/CEO of Philadelphia Federal Credit Union. “We are excited to further our support in the area with a three-year sponsorship commitment for the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby and Arts Festival. We look forward to supporting this truly unique Philadelphia tradition and helping it continue to grow and bring visitors into this neighborhood to see all the wonderful things it has to offer.”
