Community Roundup: Paper Shredding Day and Financial Literacy Month Activities

Apr 29, 2022

COVID-19 has changed many things, but it hasn't changed our commitment to our community. In April, we strengthened our commitment to several local organizations to support Philadelphians and our members by hosting a few sessions and an event in honor of Financial Literacy Month.

Highlights of our latest community activities

Paper Shredding Day

In honor of Earth Day, we held our first Shredding Events of the year at our Operations Center and Bloomsburg Branch. The events welcomed participants to shred their confidential documents – from pre-approved credit card offers to canceled checks – free-of-charge and safely recycle these materials in an eco-friendly manner, all onsite. These reoccurring event helps to protect people from identity theft and credit card fraud while helping save the planet.

Financial Literacy Month Webinars

To coincide with April being Financial Literacy Month, PFCU's Erin Ellis hosted several webinars and attended an event to help educate the community, including:

  • Federal Student Loan Repayment Webinar – This webinar detailed information on loan forgiveness programs and the implications of the student loan pause.
  • Improve Your Score, Pay Down Debt Webinar – Members learned how to pay down debt to improve their credit score.
  • Lutheran Settlement House's Economic Justice Group Session – Erin hosted two virtual sessions with Lutheran Settlement House's Economic Justice Group and its Bilingual Domestic Violence Program (BDVP), which provides free counseling services for victims and survivors of domestic and dating abuse regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
  • Philadelphia Housing Authority – During the collaborative event with PHA programs, Clarifi, and others, Erin provided resources and information to Philadelphia Housing Authority residents to assist in their transition to homeowners.

For more than a year, we have hosted webinars and free virtual events to provide useful information for our community.
