Community Roundup: Esperanza Academy Charter School
As many students in Philadelphia have returned to in-person learning this fall, PFCU's Erin Ellis had the privilege of meeting both the students in fifth grade at Esperanza Academy Charter School and some of their caregivers. Esperanza Academy Charter School offers a quality education that prepares critically thinking, socially capable, spiritually sensitive, and culturally aware young adults who can use English and Spanish while providing an academically rigorous, yet flexible, online learning program that tailors learning experiences to each child,
On Wednesday, October 27th, Erin led a group of more than 140 fifth graders, with the help of social studies teacher, Ms. Donahue, in a lesson about savings and goals. The students got to use their creativity to create a drawing of a personal savings goal. Then, each student used their design to decorate a bank to take home. Erin had fun seeing what the students want to save for—game systems, art supplies, money to help family, gifts for friends, college, and more were popular choices among the group!
On Thursday, October 28th, Erin met with the students' caregivers. Conversations were held with parents in English and Spanish (with help from Ms. Woughter at Esperanza) on prioritizing goals and saving for college.
