Q1 2023 Community Roundup
March 9, 2023
Year-round, PFCU helps ordinary Philadelphians achieve their goals. As a member-owned institution, we invest and play an active role in the community. PFCU has donated over to support several organizations and institutions throughout Philadelphia, as well as hosted educational programs.
Here's some of the work we're proud of:
Temple Basketball
As the Financial Literacy Program Sponsor that created a program for the student athletes, PFCU served as the sponsor for Temple University's Men's Basketball game on January 7 against Tulane. Co-branded PFCU/Owls baseball caps were handed out to fans at the game. There was also an on-court presentation where Temple's Director of Athletics, Arthur Johnson, presented Joseph F. McHugh Jr., Treasurer of the Board at PFCU, with the game ball to recognize the credit union's commitment to Temple.
Inner City Warriors
On February 11, PFCU was on-site as Temple Football players volunteered to practice with the Inner City Warriors football team. The Inner City Warriors football team aims to provide children from Philadelphia's inner city, aged 5 to 13, a positive outlet through sports. Owls players took the team to teach the younger players some tips for how to improve their play on the field and be good students in the classroom. PFCU provided pizza for everyone participating at the practice!
Dr. Tanner Duckrey Library Painting
PFCU partnered with the Temple Owls Football team to paint the library at Dr. Tanner Duckrey School to make the library a welcoming space for the students. The painting was completed on February 24. The Dr. Tanner Duckrey School is a Philadelphia public school serving students pre-K through 8th grade in the North Central section of the city. Dr. Tanner Grant Duckrey was an educator in Philadelphia, and the first African-American in the city to become a District Superintendent. PFCU paid for the paint and supplies used, while the Temple athletes assisted with painting alongside other volunteers.
Cecil B. Moore Library Savings Session
PFCU Financial Educator and Community Relations Specialist, Erin Ellis, ran some education sessions with neighborhood kids at the Cecil B. Moore branch of the Free Philadelphia Library. Ellis spent time teaching kids about the importance of saving. The library also donated some books to support the Dr. Tanner Duckrey School library.
PFCU Day at Bloomsburg University
On Saturday, February 25, PFCU members and fans enjoyed a doubleheader at Bloomsburg University for the Huskies' men's and women's basketball season finale against West Chester. Employees of PFCU's Bloomsburg branch were on-site to distribute co-branded Huskies scarves and thunder sticks to fans in attendance.
251st Philadelphia Saint Patrick's Day Parade
On Sunday, March 12, PFCU Board members, committee members, employees, their families and friends marched in the 2023 Philadelphia Saint Patrick's Day Parade. PFCU maintains an annual presence at the parade and was recognized this year by the Philadelphia Saint Patrick's Day Observance Association with the Hon. James H.J Tate Award. Founded in 1980, the award recognizes an outstanding organization that exemplifies the spirit of the parade.
EmpowHER Networking Night
On March 27, PFCU partnered with Temple Athletics to host a networking night titled "EmpowHER" to commemorate Women's History Month. The goal of the event was to help connect Temple's student-athletes with successful women across various industries, educate them on potential barriers women face across all industries, and empower them to pursue their career dreams. PFCU served as co-sponsor for the event and supplied food for all attendees. Other companies and organizations involved included the Philadelphia Eagles, MERC, Comcast, Philadelphia Phillies, the Mayor's Office of Engagement for Women, Temple's Fox School of Sport, Tourism & Hospitality Management.
