PFCU in the Community: Q3 2023
September 27, 2023
Throughout the year, PFCU takes pride in assisting ordinary Philadelphians in achieving their financial goals. As an institution owned by its members, we are deeply invested in the well-being of our community. Demonstrating our commitment, we have donated both resources and valuable time to support various organizations and institutions across Philadelphia. Plus, we host educational programs to empower and educate individuals.
Here's some of the work we're proud of:
AUNI
For the seventh consecutive year, PFCU Community Relations Specialist and Financial Educator Erin Ellis continued her tradition of providing financial education to middle and high school students through the Agatston Urban Nutrition Initiative (AUNI) of UPenn's Netter Center this summer. This time, the focus was on learning through games. High school students collaborated to develop a zero-based budget for the entire class, engaging in discussions and simplified budgeting decisions for their future. Both middle and high school students enjoyed a "Price is Right" style game that introduced them to common expenses and the significance of saving. The students enthusiastically participated in these games, offering their opinions and making financial decisions. After learning about budgeting and saving, they applied these skills to making choices regarding their own summer earnings, setting goals, and creating spending and savings plans.
Youth Literacy Event Hosted by State Representative Joanna McClinton
On July 17, the Youth Literacy Event held at the Sayre Rec Center was dedicated to promoting literacy and fostering a love for reading within our community. PFCU was tabling on-site with giveaways and brochures featuring information on becoming a member. Highlights included interactive storytelling sessions for children, a book fair featuring a wide range of genres, and exciting activities and games for kids and families.
Senator Street's Back-to-School Fair
On August 19, our Business Development Specialist, Leanne Dewitt, was thrilled to be part of the action at Senator Street's Back-to-School Fair. She brought smiles and valuable insights, as Leanne distributed informative PFCU-related literature and exciting free giveaways.
Temple University's TempleFest
We had a blast engaging with Temple University's incoming freshmen at TempleFest! Held annually on campus at Liacouras Walk, this involvement fair included student organizations, departments, and vendors who connect with the students. Leanne Dewitt, PFCU Business Development Specialist met hundreds of students, introduced them to PFCU, and gave away some awesome prizes!
ASPIRA of PA Community Event
On August 25, PFCU hosted an event to celebrate our community and offer resources to families in need. We provided a range of activities for children, such as face painting, raffles, sales, and a dedicated area for children's projects. We distributed plenty of back-to-school supplies and a collection of books. Additionally, we set up a table where we shared information on student accounts.
Episcopal Community Services Back-to-School Bash
On August 31, the Back-to-School Bash was held at the St. Barnabas Community Resource Center. PFCU set up a table where we provided information on student accounts and offered various activities, including school supplies distribution, face painting, games, prizes, cotton candy, popcorn, a DJ, a hula hoop competition, food, drinks, health and wellness activities for the whole family, exhibitors, and more.
Philadelphia OIC Business Panel
On September 6, the culinary program at OIC organized a panel discussion featuring industry experts who spoke about entrepreneurship, work, and business culture. Attendees left that night feeling empowered and well-positioned to hit the ground running in their professional endeavors.
Shredding Day Event
On September 16, members gathered their old credit card statements and other personal papers — and joined us for our semiannual Shredding Day event! We hosted it on the grounds of our Operations Center, where two trucks were available to securely shred members' documents on-site. With family, friends, and neighbors alongside, members simply drove up, opened their trunk, and let PFCU handle the rest.
When we lend our unwavering support towards these exceptional endeavors, it truly underscores our commitment to effecting positive change in the lives of Philadelphians.
