PFCU in the Community: Q2 2023

Throughout the year, PFCU takes pride in assisting ordinary Philadelphians in achieve their financial goals. As an institution owned by its members, we are deeply invested in the well-being of our community. Demonstrating our commitment, we have generously donated both resources and valuable time to support various organizations and institutions across Philadelphia. Plus, we even host educational programs to empower and educate individuals.

Here’s some of the work we’re proud of:

Mining Diamonds

On March 3, PFCU’s Erin Ellis was invited to present the details of PFCU and Temple Athletics’ Financial Education Partnership ‘Mining Diamonds’ to Temple’s head coaching staff. The Mining Diamonds program is a collaboration between PFCU and Temple Athletics where PFCU’s financial experts like Erin Ellis, provide financial education sessions to Temple athletes to prepare them for life after graduation. 

EmpowHER

On March 27, PFCU and Temple Athletics co-sponsored a networking night to commemorate Women’s History Month. The goal of the event was to serve as a networking opportunity for current student-athletes at Temple by connecting them with community business leaders. The event was a “who’s who” of regional and national enterprises like Subaru and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mifflin Madness

On April 15, PFCU was a community sponsor for Mifflin Madness, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and community event. Comprising of teacher vs. student-led teams, the competition was fierce until the final buzzer. There were also events for younger kids, local vendors on site, snacks and student performances to enjoy.

Dobbins Peace Garden

In recent news, the students at Dobbins Technical High School have produced an insightful documentary, delving into the underlying causes of violence and its correlation to the environment. On April 20th, Ellis, had the honor of attending the dedication ceremony of the new Dobbins Peace Garden. PFCU further demonstrated its commitment to the cause by sponsoring lunch for the students, while also lending support to a locally owned establishment, Rock N Rolls. This exceptional endeavor received backing from various community organizations, including Dobbins Alumni Association, Soil Generation, and Interpret Green. 

The Stellas at Temple University

On April 25, PFCU Community Relations Specialist Erin Ellis attended The Stellas, an awards ceremony recognizing Temple student-athletes and their academic achievement. Temple University donated a table so PFCU team could attend to enjoy the event and celebrate the students and the partnership with Temple Athletics.

LGBTQ Center Fair

On April 27, The William Way Center held a re-opening event for their LGBTQ Lending Library, with community members and supporters onsite. Hosted by Philadelphia F.I.G.H.T, a PFCU associate was in attendance and offered free giveaways and accompanying literature on what the credit union has to offer its community. 

Kensington Derby & Arts Festival

On Saturday, May 13, PFCU returned as a sponsor for the Kensington Derby & Arts Festival. Several PFCU associates were on-site distributing free giveaways to attendees interested in learning more of PFCU’s mission. Held annually, the Kensington Derby & Arts Festival includes a three-mile bike race, as well as live music, food stands, and a variety of local artisans to support.

Old Pine Community/Opportunity Day

On June 3, PFCU proudly joined as a sponsor of the esteemed Old Pine Community/Opportunity Day, and made a gracious donation of $500 and provided a school bus to facilitate the collection of food donations. The community truly came together, exemplifying their unwavering support, resulting in an impressive collection of over 1,000 pounds of food for local families in need. The Old Pine Community Center is dedicated to ensuring access to quality and nutritious food for all community members. Through their ongoing efforts, they provide essential care packages on a weekly basis, comprising groceries and other household necessities, to local families experiencing food insecurity. 

Mt. Airy Day

On Saturday, June 3, PFCU was a sponsor of the annual Mt. Airy Day - a festival celebrating the rich cultural history of the Mt. Airy neighborhood. A PFCU associate was present, distributing educational literature to community members and indulge attendees with free giveaways.

Made Institute 10th Anniversary Fashion Show

As sponsor of Made Institute’s 10th Anniversary Fashion Show, PFCU empowered the coalition of young designers who presented their capsule collections to the public - a culmination of hard work on behalf of the institute’s student body. The Made Institute plans to hold a fashion show this fall in celebration of its milestone anniversary, as well as a chance for donors to fund 10 full-tuition grants for the Institute’s Designer Development Program.
